Why is it only small bikes/peds etc are automatic(twist and go)why not a 600 automatic?
Answers:
Small mopeds are nearly all centrifugal clutches. The clutch faces are on spring loaded plates that are attached to the drive side of the engines. As the engine speeds up the plates move out under centrifugal force and press against a drum. that is attached to the drive train that gives you forward motion.
Bigger engines (IE sports type) produce to much torque to quickly. I think Moto Guzzi produced a car type hydraulic drive on their 1000cc Californian in the 80`s It never sold well over here. I tried to out drag one on a 250cc YDS7 Yamaha once and although it got the jump on me before it got more than 50ft down the road had passed it, Good idea but slow and heavy. If Honda had a word with Nissan the variable belt drive system they have on their Premira would be brilliant for the Honda Gold Wing or any large capacity touring bike
here ya go . Honda has a boss looking 680 Cc with an automatic tranny comming out soon ..here is a link .. I think this is a slick looking bike. I dont know enough about it to give a technical answer but here is one . http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/newsan.
auto gear boxes are big and heavy, 1 for a 50cc scooter is fine
1 for a 600cc bike frecking massive.
You can make most bikes semi-automatic with a centrifugal clutch. You put the bike in gear and give it gas and go. You take off and shift without the clutch.
Try checking out the Honda Silverwing or the Suzuki Burgman which I think are both 650cc and twist and go.
b m w once produced a 1500 cc automatic with a reverse which is basically a twist and go but that takes all the fun out of biking when you've got all that power at the flick of your wrist you want to play with the gears and the rev band it's the best feeling in the world screaming through the gears and winding it on try it you'll see but be safe.
Honda made one years ago, called oddly enough, the Hondamatic. It was a pretty good size engine for a rice burner, but the auto tranny technology was a dud, and the bike was a dog. Now that the technology is better, look for another in the near future.
There is a company called Ridley that makes big bikes with automatic transmissions. However, You should probably make sure your bank account is full when you go looking at them.
Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha all make big cc, twist and go scooters with Large wheels, the honda is a 600cc and goes like a bat out of hell, but you have to have them serviced every 6 months to keep the w'tee going.
The Yamaha is the Best as the service intervals are good.
why would you want an automatic? Just get a moped for that.
