My 98 escort is making a grinding noise on the stearing wheel its only just happened a few days ago any ideas?

had a new stearing rack fitted in november and mot in january . could it just need adjusting ?

Answers:
If the noise sounds as though it coming from the steering wheel then it is most likely to be the top steering column bush/bearing.
Take hold of the steering wheel as normal & try to move it up & down if it moves more than approx.5-10mm, it is the top bush.
It is a fairly simple job to replace.
your escort needs steering fluid or the inside past the dashboard of the escort somewhere it needs oil. and i'm only 14 but it is pretty obvious though
Check your power steering fluid. You may have a leak. I had to change out the high pressure hose and a steel pipe on mine because it was leaking. Pain in the neck!
Is your cat missing?
A Ford Escort?!?! A '98 and it's still actually running?!!

The noise from the steering column could be serious, there are certain joints in the steering rack system that are undoubtedly broken or long dry on Lube. or improperly installed!
Is there a bit of crap stuck between the steering wheel and the dash? That could do it.
Otherwise try checking the power steering fluid.
But best of avoiding FORDs like the plague as they are awfull, go drive a Jap car, reliable but dull. Unlike the Escort Unreliable and Dull.
the horn slip ring can dry out, making it squeak, groan or whatever else. if the noise is coming directly from the wheel, thats probably yer man. if its a little lower down the steering column, more than likely the top bush/bearing as someone else has mentioned
I would try steering fluid first! If that doesnt help nip down to your local garage it costs nothing for advice!
do not drive ur car with this problem i had the same thing in a ford transit it was a joint at the base of the steering wheel column my mechanic told me i was lucky as if it snaps u will hav no steering at all (u can imagine wot will happen if it goes whilst driving) take it to ur nearest reliable garage
there may be 1 other reason and that is the wheel bearing (not steering wheel) but u can easily check this by grabbing ur tyre with both hands and rocking it side to side if it moves then its ur whell bearing
