Do speed cameras photograph the front or rear number plates?

Answers:
The normal speed cameras (yellow or blue boxes) take two photos of your rear license plate. If you were flashed by one, there is around a 40% chance you will be fined. Believe it or not, not every picture taken will be followed up, police take a sample of pictures. Also alot of speed cameras, depending on how often they are maintained, run out of film. So you could have been flashed with now film in the camera.

There are Gatso cameras that use a laser to determine your speed as they are coming towards you, these are rare. They are mostly mobile devices used by police doing spot checks.
both as far as I know, depending on the type of camera
rear
rear number plate because they cant caculate your speed unless you get past them
Rear, u don't have to have a front plate in alot of states.
Rear plates, I have had two tickets, and always shows passenger side, and rear of car.
i think both, but mostly they take you after you speed past them, hence the flash in your rearview..
maybe that's why they are called speed cameras
Yes
This answer is for UK users only, don't know about other places in the world. It depends where the camera is sited. If the camera is on the left hand side and its lens is facing away from you as you approach, then it will take your rear number plate, as do red light/speed cameras. Some cameras will take the front number plate, if it is sited on left hand of road and lens facing you as you approach. 1 year left for a clean licence :o(
yes
rear.. same as the cameras for going over a red light.
sometimes the front but they usually do the back. and yes they can calculate your speed even if your behind them or infront of them or travelling in whatever direction
rear
the 1 st answer is correct
depends which direction you approach the camera
It depends most are rear but now they have got new ones which take both front and rear to prove who is driving.
from my understanding it's front and rear
thats a big yes and when you go to court they will have a poster of you as big as your 50 inch TV set and it will get the pimples on your face if you have any, its $300.00 min fine in california
Not sure about speed cameras but i do know that theres new hand held speed guns that record your speed front and back and it wont matter what side of the road your on, for instance a motorway.Theyl also know if the car is road taxed and motd.
in the uk they can be either kind. the a43 has ones that capture the front image so they can see the actual driver too. This way you cant say your wife was driving and give her the points.unless of course she looks like you too.
It depends on what type of camera.
The older type that uses film, photographs the rear plate.
You can identify this camera by the white lines across the road after the camera. The camera takes two photos and they are compared to the lines. The camera also flashes.

The second and newer type of camera is digital. It faces you as you drive and takes a picture of your front plate. (no flash, its inferred). There are usually just 3 thin lines across the road.
This camera sends the image to a control room and they send you a ticket.

The cameras are always on your side of road no matter what the type.
