Bikers - when to wave and when not too?

The general rule is we wave, honk, nod heads, lift out a foot etc when we meet another biker, but what do we do if the other biker is a police biker - do we wave then, or pretend that we havent seen them? This is causing me real problems, especailly as there is a regular police biker that I see - who happens to be an very attractive lady police biker?

Answers:
I happen to be a motorcycle officer. Feel free to wave or nod. If the officer is riding alone, they will probably wave back. If there are more than one riding together, you may not get a return wave. Don't take it personal. That little wave to the side most bikers give is a hand signal used by officers riding in a group and can be taken by the other officers as just that. So to avoid miscommunication between motor officers, a wave may not be returned.

Motor cops do what other cops are too afraid to do.
I would nod the same , he / she is only human and i find most motorcycle police are more understanding than the normal clones.
Speed past em doing a wheely that should get you on talking terms then decide from there
You forgot Sub Rule #1 -- if you are riding a Harley, never nod wave or in any way acknowledge anyone on a Japanese bike (from my experiences as a Honda rider).

Seriously though, yeah I would definitely give the police officer a polite lift if the fingers (ALL of them, not just one! lol) on the nearest hand. Cops have a tough job, they like it when you acknowldge them, it reaffirms them and lets them know you appreciate the risks they are taking for you.

PS: LMAO @ Smudge824 ^^^
we should acknowledge all motorcyclists as a matter of mutual respect as we all deal with the same problems on the road except for idiots on scooters who seem to think they are totally invincible and treat every road user with contempt and endanger all road users and members of the public with their antics.
I wave at cops. In general, they are good people. Don't act like a poser. Be yourself.
Find out under what underpass the lady motorcop is going to be checking inspection stickers . Cruise through, strike up a converstation. You already have motorcycles as a common ground ice breaker. ;-)
I wave to all motorcyclist whether their on a harley, a cop, or other club members. I've known Judges, cops who ride on the side and they wear the noveity helmets just like the others on the road. The "Blue Knights MC" are all law enforcement members and many of their riding techniques are not up to power and they themselves could be ticketed as well, but there's a common bond that being on the road on 2 wheels that's shared. I know the cops in this little town where I live ride cycles on the side, and we'll talk about different runs coming up and what have you, but it would be rare to get pulled over by them unless I was over doing it. Back to your question..I wave to all that ride.
Always wave ! .if they dont wave back I assume they are just learning how to ride and to afraid to remove hand from handle bar ,(thats with people on bikes in general )
Motorcycle cops always seem to wave to me first ,I have yet to see a woman motorcycle cop in my county
I always give a wave to the coppers in my neighborhood, but hey..they are on Harleys..I gotta comply with Sub Rule #1.
I wave to police bikes. Harleys rarely wave back, so I don't bother with them. Power Rangers on sports bikes usually don't have time (or occasionally the co-ordination) to wave back. I ignore scooters, as they aren't proper bikes. Gold Wing riders can be up themselves sometimes, but I wave to them anyway.
I think you should honk, then wave while nodding your head and sticking your foot out. LOL
i hav nodded at police bikers before just nod at them as u wud any other biker
then why not just flash your fullbeam at her breifly? then if you get pulled say you hit the wrong switch whilst trying to indicate :-D
jkc6229; I have noticed exactly what you mentioned. I always wave at all riders, and for the most part they all wave back. But I have noticed that when I see two or more L.E.O.'s riding together they seldom wave. Now I know why. Thanks.
Do what you feel is right.. Just don't be stupid infront of her. Obviously it's not illegal to wave.. so if you feel you should, then do it.
I always wave to everyone - makes me smile when the cops wave back.
Flag her down and tell her there is an emergency in your pants.
Wave at 'em all. Trouble with me is I've been riding for 20 yrs an' I still forget not to wave with me hand when I is goin' fast and me hand ends up behind me head somewhere. so embarrassin'.
There is no law against waving to a cycle cop. If they wave back great ,if they don't, oh well, you tried. Bikers are a wonderful group to be a part of , whether you belong to a club or not. And as far as Sub rule #1 goes, We have a Kawasaki Vulcan Classic, and we get waves and extremely wonderful complements from all sorts of bike owners, Harley owners in particular. Our bike holds it's own in looks when parked next to a whole row of Harleys. The thing is to never be afraid to wave to a sister or brother biker. Ride Safe.
try lifting out your foot.
I believe that the safest way to acknowledge another biker is to nod, if we all adopt this as the only way to say hi then a lot more new riders would not lose control or freak out and lose balance, concentration etc.
When I did the bike safe police course I noticed that all the police bikers just nodded at each other and I have practised this on the road and 100% of the time I get a nod in return.
Safe riding
Tony
WAVE, MAN, WAVE! My personal rule is to wave to ALL bikers, be they on cruisers, standards, endorus or sportbikes. This means old leathery HOGs, T-shirt wearing Squids, and even cops.

Sometimes I'm concentrating on not getting squished and may not see you, but if you're on two wheels you're family. Police included. I doubt you'd be pulled over for waving at one, just don't expect a wave in return. It at least shows that you are AWARE of your surroundings and competent enough to say "hello."

Doing a burnout after a 3rd gear wheelie probably wouldn't go over as well.
i agree give her a polite nod, it is a sign of respect if you start taking your hands off the handlebar, and if she is a real stickler at work, she might try and arrest you (but hey that would be a great icebreaker)
I always wave to other motorcyclists. I even wave to motor cops unless I am riding lidless in a helmet state and don't wish to draw more attention to myself. However I have noticed most cops in NC do not seem very inclined to enforce their helmet at least in my experience.
nod wave, whatever. She's got an engine between her legs n she's on 2 wheels so she's one of us dude. Give her the same respect as we give each other.
My rules:
Nod at learners on motorcycles
Dont nod to scooters, mopeds
Nod to anyone on a motorcycle
Dont bother nodding to a Harley rider as they are all ignorant bar-stools . Plus if they nod once they will continue like a nodding dogs, due to the poor suspension and extreme v-twin low speed vibration.

I dont bother noding at police motorcyclists, as they may think im being funny, and pull me over. Besides which I dont see police motorcyclists who nod.
I dont think a Police motorcyclist would nod.. due to some Police political thing. Or that they think all other bikers are inferior and are possible future customers!.

Personally the only time i have ever seen a Police bikers aknowledge me, is to check if im legal!.

Dont nod to paramedics
Remember the local antisocial bikers wo dont nod, incase you see them broken down and you can just ride on and ignore them!.
I ride a Harley and i give the wave no matter what kind of bike they are riding or who they are.lets be real here we're all doing what we love.ridin'.it doesn't matter what who you are
Bikes/sports, yes.
Mopeds, no.
Harleys, no.
Police, no.

Having said that, if they wave me, I'll nod back, so long as they don't fit into these categories:

Anyone riding like an idiot, no.
Anyone who spends 500 quid on an Arai lid, but is wearing tennis shoes and t-shirt, no jacket/gloves, or any sort of sensible protection, no. (typically to be found also riding like an idiot)
