Why is the fifth wheel on a truck so called?
Answers:
the "fith" wheel is called so because it's the Faith wheel able for the other 4 to transport different kinds of trailers, it wouldn't we able to do a way to connect to the trailer. nickname from the early twenty's when they first came into wide spread use.
kinda obvious isn't it? two in front two in back (nowdays there are six more in the back) and the fifth for the trailer..
the spare
Because it's not used to move the truck. Thus not having a say to where the truck goes, or any part in the truck's successful course or not. Metaphorically speaking.
Semis that haul trailers use a "fifth wheel" to connect the trailer directly over the rear axle. Since it is round in shape and carried directly above the rear axle it picked up that name and it is still with us. Actually on a ten wheel tractor this would be the "eleventh wheel".
First two answers are idiots. I am not sure why the fifth wheel is called the fifth wheel however at least I know what it is! LOL I am guessing because it sort of looks like a wheel when the trailer is disconnected from it.
