Dawn makes a spray-on stuff made for cleaning really tough greasy baked-on messes, and it works amazingly well on a dirty/greasy engine.
Simple green works well on non-aluminum parts. Don't let it touch aluminum parts, it will stain.
The pipe - depends on what's dirty about it. If it's rusty, you'll have to use a very fine steel wool and lots of lubricant like wd40. If it's just oily, baked-on gunk, go for the Dawn again.
An old toothbrush works really well to get into the crevasses of the engine. Use a very soft cloth on the pipes.
Be sure to start the bike and let it warm up to operating temperature once you're done cleaning it.
Washing a bike, especially when there's a big difference between the temp of the metal and the water temp can cause condensation inside the engine, which can rust piston rings, etc.
My 2003 blue fazer I always wash it with Oil Diesel, yes diesel that I buy of petrol stations, I put it in a spray bottle and spray it throughout the bike (avoid parts made of rubber and black plastic such as lids) the rest is fine the dirt will come right off. Leave it for a hour or so then brush with with lots of soap, just regular dish washing soap. Lot of water afterwards. Then like the guys said just finish it up with wd-40, that stuff is great shines the black part of your bike, wd-40 may be spray on everything on the bike! Less glass and mirrors of course!
