In ww2 german paratroopers were suspended by 1 main chord to the parachute?
Answers:
Yes, but the cord was not directly attached to the chute. I was attached to the rigging, then to a harness the Paratroopers wore. NO ability to steer like the English and American chutes. Often Germans would use captured equipment as it performed better. The chute I believe was also designed for VERY low drop altitudes, the theory was, you were down so fast, no need for steering etc. Pilots chutes were different in the harness area the pilots wore, the chute was approx the same. They improved and changed the design as the wore moved forward, early pilot harness broke on occasion when opening, leading to a rapid descent with a sudden stop at the end
No they had a rip cord because if they bailed out they would have to be some distance from the plane before opening the shute
