Does my car use more petrol when my air/con is on?

Answers:
yes because the a/c compressor is being powred by engine from the serpentine belt, and is uses part of the horsepower to power the a/c unit.
yes.on the average of 2 to 4 mpg
yes it does.
Yes.

However, at speeds over 55 mph it is more economical then using open windows.
yes. it also does if you have one of them flags attatched to your cars (you will know what i mean if you live in UK)
According to the Mythbusters, it uses more gas to drive with the window open than with the air on b/c the car is less aerodynamic.
Yes. Based on the following link, it looks as if running your air conditioning can decrease mileage by around 12%. The air conditioner draws power from your car's alternator, which is powered by the engine. So logically that energy isn't "free" and your engine needs to work harder with the A/C on comared to off.

This is a bit more in-depth:

Hope it helps!
Yes your cars compressor takes 25% of your engines power to run the a/c so it will require more fuel.
It definately uses more petrol cause it has to work more if it travels 10 KM in a liter of petrol then with AC on it will travel about
7 KM
Yes and you can see the difference in the engine revs on the dashboard when idling.
Yep.
Yes, also it can cause the engine to get hot if your stuck in a traffic jam or towing
Yes it does, however, I have heard that is better to use the AC while driving at speeds of 50 and above, because the wind coming in the car tries to hold the car back so in turn needs more power to push the car forward. The way I see it, whatever makes me comfortable that is what I am going to do.
Yes.The AC compressor is turned by a belt on the motor resulting in more drag on the motor.Turning it on & off engages & releases a clutch & pully which the belt drives. That speed thing is wrong.(answer above)AC works better at higher speeds because the more air (wind) flows through the AC condenser the cooler it is & makes things run cooler all around.
Yes but it is still cheaper than driving with your window down. Proven
yes, not loads but sum more.
no!actually it dont use as much and ill tell you why, because when you got your windows down you got back pressure when the wind is coming through the windows and when you got the air cond. on the windows are up so the car dont have back pressure and besides the air cond. pump clutch dont work all the time anyways.
yep
yes it does. Air-con is a drain of power, the more power you use, the more fuel you use. It is more economical however, to wind up your windows and use air-con at higher speeds.
Yes it does. With the current gasoline prices, I would suggest NOT using it at all for economics sake. If you have to stay 'cool', you will pay for the extra petrol/gasoline.
yes
Yes Just watch your rev counter it will drop when you switch air con on That's because you have engaged a compressor whose job is to pump refrigerant around your system ,If your rev counter drops its because the engine is working harder that uses more fuel Regards Mick
