It could be a few different things. You explanation is not quit helpfull but it could be a air flow or oxygen sensor. Is it shifting ok, is it getting hot, does it hesitate?
I had one of them a metallic lilac one with a big spoiler on the back. Great fun, some of the best days of my life behind the wheel of that baby. Had exactly the same problem myself, towards the end of my paper round it would start to play up (usually on the M18). It would get really hot and bothered. My solution was to take a towel, pop open the bonnet and fan the engine for a couple of minutes. It soon regained its composure and I could finish my round. Give it a go. Hope that helps
