What is the most economical car to run in England? i.e. insurance and M.P.G.?

I have heard reports that there are some Diesel Smart cars in England, imported from Europe, that can acheive 80 M.P.G. Can this figure be beaten?

Little Peugeots are the most economical - because remember you have to pay out a relative lot of money for a Smart car (Mercedes in disguise) - whereas a really nice little secondhand Peugeot will only cost you between £1000 - £2500 - and this will save you money straight away! (And there's 4 seats and a boot to put your shopping in, unlike the Smart.)

Some models of Peugeot 106 diesel can do up to 75mpg. Seriously! And as they're small they are cheaper insurance. AND you can pick these cars up secondhand for cheap - between £600 to £1500 for a reasonable one.

In fact the Peugeot 106 petrol isn't so bad on the mileage either - drive them well and they do at least 60mpg AND are in the cheaper tax band, and the little 1.1 engines are also cheaper to insure. Insurance group 2 or 3 - I think. Dirt cheap!!

But it all depends on your age, how long you've been driving and how many years no-claims you have!
that would be a robin reliant!
A bicycle. Unlimited miles per gallon.
Astra 1.7 TD. It does 58 mpg and is insurance group 4.
Seat arosa 1.0

Cheap insurance, Volkswagen made so reliable.

Cheap road tax, cheap on fuel.
I have as my second car (good weather only, for fun) a citeon 2CV 60 mpg and the insurance was £100 fully comp. £120 3rd party! F & T!! Obviously it will depend on your circumstances though
We run a Clio dci that gets 65 mpg and is group 3 insurance and a Fiat Multipla diesel that gets 60 ( not the makers claimed 70 mpg) and is group 3. The Clio also has long service intervals and mine never goes wrong, done 85000 miles in 3 years and is a great car
