Get yourself Skoda Fabia 1,9 TDI. Don't get fooled by the name - it's a German car with German engine. Fuel consumption is around 6 l per 100km, engine is 74kW/101HP, 0-100 km/h 11,5 seconds. Best of all, spare parts are cheap and the engine is unbreakable. And you can definitely use it on the motorway. There is a RS TDI version with 130HP too.

I have driven every Polo under the sun and i promise you the TDi version is just as quick as the GTi and is better on fuel. Not as much Kudos, but its a wicked car to drive.
You might laugh, but try a skoda fabia hatchback. I had one as a rent a car and they're nice cars.
Bear in mind, VW make them, so if you were after a polo, you might find you get the same quality for less with a fabia.
If you really can't bring yourself to buy a skoda, go for a golf TDI, they're well nice. Diesel, but you wouldn't know it, and because of being diesel cheaper to insure, cheaper fuel costs etc.
You need to be clear about what you actually need. Buying a two seater sports roadster is great fun but is usless if you want to give your mates a lift.
If you buy a 4 door car you will find it easier to resell when you want to trade up.
Don't buy trouble. A car that still has some manufacturers warranty has extra value.
Watch out for imports. They often look like better value but you can have some trouble with servicing and warranty.
Once you add letters like GTi to a car you are asking the insurance companies to increase your premiums.
Check Ebay as you can look at a sellers track record before you part with your cash.
With £5000 to spend you have a lot of choice - take your time and enjoy the task!
Ive got a POLO16v and thats good I always wanted to swap it for the GTi but never got round to it, but I would say spend the extra on the insurance and go for it.
Dont get a corsa, fiesta, focus, C2, clio or naything like that you will be board and the performmance and build quality is rubbish!
Why not look at the seat ibiza as its is a polo chassis and engine just a different body, and I think the insurance is slightly better.
Hyundai Coupe from about 2000-2001 (facelift model of the old body shell) - brilliant retro - Maserati style looks, bombproof, laden with extras (aircon, CD player, sunroof, leather seats etc etc) and cheap to run . Also practical as there is a usable back seat and large boot. The suspension/handling was sorted by Porsche engineers - and for you the bonus is that there is a 1.6 model which is slightly gutless in terms of flat out performance (though will whisk you along the motorway perfectly happily at 90) but the insurance should be about as cheap as you can get on a coupe style car. I'm on my second 2 litre model and both of the ones I've had have cost about £5.5k - so the 1.6 should be affordable for you with your budget.. they also have often been run as second cars so they often have comparatively low mileage.
Ok, may sound odd but a Skoda Fabia VRS, turbo diesel. I know its a Skoda, but honestly they are great little cars and excellent value for money, get as new as possible!
Just got one as my company car, got taken on by some boy racers in a Honda Civic and it just left them. Also 70 miles to the gallon makes it cheap to run!
Skodas now have VW parts so really reliable, I had an octavia before the Fabia (got rid because I have to renew my car every 3 years and I wanted a smaller car). Go on, take one for a test drive!
i'd say go looking for a nice car don't rush into it i've made many mistakes by jumping into buyin a car, and you usaully end up worse off than you were before hope this helps why not an audi A3 spot on.
peugeot 307 are pretty sexy, fun and easy on the insurance.
or a ford focus.
A second hand mini is cool too.
A VW Golf diesel (yes "turbo diesel"). Economy and with the high HP engine - good performance.
Ford Focus - I had the Black 3 door 1.8 Zetec model that cost £5500 second hand and £500 a year to insure. I only passed my test a year ago. Insurance is dirt cheap on Ford - not the best looking of cars and I had to really hunt around for the my semi decent one!

Go for an '04 Focus 1.6 Zetec or better, try for a 2.0 model.
I've been running a Focus for years now, never once put a foot wrong, they're concrete cars, reliable, playful and f***ing sweet to drive and, good looking too (don't let arseholes tell you otherwise!)

Yes consider the nissan micra sport.A bit of tarting up and you have a little gem.Fast and good MPG also cheaper to insure
