Double Over-Head Camshaft.
Disastrously Overpriced Heap of Crap..?
D ual O ver H ead Cam which mean that tha cams shafts are located on top of the cynlinder head. one cam is for intake and the other one for eXaust. regular engines have one camshaft. 4 cylinder twin cam means 2 cams and 6 and 8 have 4 cams
If you look at sections 5 - 15 of the linked page you'll see the Double Over-Head Camshaft of a Ford Sierra engine. It is visible once the engine's top cover (rocker cover on older engines) has been removed.
Along the camshaft are the pear-shaped/oval cams which open and close the valves.
There is a camshaft for the inlet valves and another for the exhaust (outlet) valves, i.e. two shafts over the valves.
The camshafts are driven by the timing chain from the crankshaft at the bottom of the engine. You can imagine the mayhem if the chain breaks and the pistons mangle the valves!
dual over head cam
It is DOUBLE Over Head Cam - at least here in Briatain!
I've always known it it DOUBLE.and every mechanic I know will say double.

I don't know where 'DUAL' is coming from?

U.S terminology?
DOHC stands for Dual Overhead Cams. The cam and camshaft in a cars engine makes all the difference in the cars performance. Dual shafts mounted over (overhead)
the valves will give you maximum performance and fuel economy.
A double overhead camshaft (also called double overhead cam, dual overhead cam or twincam) valvetrain layout is characterized by two camshafts being located within the cylinder head, where there are separate camshafts for inlet and exhaust valves..
UK - Double Overhead Camshaft
US - Dual Overhead Camshaft

Just to point something out to the person who said most cars only have SOHC - They don't, most smaller engined cars have SOHC, most larger engined cars have DOHC (1.4 and below counts as smaller engine).
