Invented around 1800. The Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR), which opened in 1825, was the first permanent steam locomotive railway.

In the mid 18th Century - Matthew Trevithick a Cornish miner attached wheels to a static steam boiler and invented the first steam locomotive, it was used to pull wagons of cornish tin and other minerals.

Later in the early 18th Century passenger traffic began to appear.
