Have lifejackets in aircraft ever been successful in saving lives?
Answers:
Rare, but yes.
Off the top of my head I could only think of the Ethiopian flight were some were saved, and more would have been if they had followed the directions on how to use their life vest.
I did a quick search, the following url can lead you to more information:

yes
l dont think so l dont think you would have time.
People often say they don't because when an aircraft ditches it usually breaks up and kills everyone anyway. However lifevests have been known to make a difference for example when an aireacft over runs a runway on end up in the sea. It's true though they have probably killed more people than they save, but only due to people stupidly inflating them too early.
I assume when you say aircraft you are only referring to commercial airplanes. usually when a plane crashes into the water, there is little chance of it surviving impact on water. Especially with a 747, the bulky aluminum frame gets torn apart at the high speeds that it hits the water.
But there are numerous reports of life preservers being effective in saving lives in helicopter crashes. The helicopter flys at lower speeds and can survive a water crash a lot better than a jet airliner could.
That doesnt mean that the jet airliners shouldnt carry life preservers, because there are so many things that could happen in the event of a crash. Life preservers in airplanes, even with a small record (if any) of success, still can save lives whenever they are needed.
A lot of safety mechanisms in planes are just there for your well being. A lot of them wouldn't be of any use 95% of the time. My mum used to be an air hostess, she says her training is basically a waste of time. If a plane goes down, 95% of the time it will break into a million pieces. On the safety video it shows a plane floating nicely in the water. How do you expect a plane to land in the sea like that? As soon as the engines hit the water the wings will be ripped off etc. Let's not forget in the middle of the ocean waves are in excess of 20 feet.
DEFINITELY. Life jackets are stowed on aircraft flown over large bodies of water.
WITH lifejackets, individual passengers have a fair chance of survival.
WITHOUT lifejackets is like no room on a lifeboat when the Titanic is heading for Davy Jones' Locker.
