What is the hardest thing about learning to drive a manual car?

Answers:
The hardest thing to learn regarding the standard transmission is to use the clutch properly meaning to move upwards smoothly to just before engagement before pushing on the accelerator. Often, new learners will pull the clutch too fast or too far causing the car to stall, or will go too slowly or too jerky. Once you figure out the engaging point, you'll be all set.

Passenger cars in the US have syncromesh manual transmissions. If it were a big truck, or select foreign car, you'd have to learn to double-clutch which would be a whole new set of issues entirely.

It's a peice of cake really.
For me it was stopping and starting on a hill. Everything else was a piece of cake!
releasing the clutch and pushing the gas the right amount and at the right time.
Getting the timing between feet and the stick to work.
i found converting to driving an Auto box harder than learning a manual. The amount of times i stamped on the brake thinking it was the clutch!
Timing..its all about timing.and well hills I stayed away from them for awhile.
I would say that when you are stopped at a red light light heading uphill, it is tricky to engage to clutch when the light turns green without rolling backwards and/or stalling.
Getting the car to "biting point" is considered the hardest thing about driving a manual car.. that is getting the car into first gear and getting it to move without bunny hopping down the road or stalling it!

I didn't have a problem mastering this beyond the first 5 mins.. you do get the hang of it very quickly, unless you're completely incompetent.
probably when in first gear or about to start balancing the gas and clutch so that you'll have a smooth ride specially when you are on a steep hill going up
First gear is the hardest gear to get, especially if you are on an incline. Best thing to do is find an empty parking lot & practice, practice, practice. It is a lot of fun once you master it! It took me about a week to get it down.
When you first learn, I would say it's releasing the clutch and pressing the gas in 1st gear. That's why I'm glad I learned in a Saturn. When I was learning, there was a light on the dashboard that lit everytime it was time for me to shift gears.
I thought it was very awkward fooling around in a car and risky.like trying to get around the shift stick and not popping it out of gear and panicking to get it under control while its flying down the road and you have your pants around your ankles and with the motor off there isn't any power-steering..well you know the rest of the police report !
Driving with both feet. Taking off from a stop especially on hill. I've had to make people go around me so that I could roll backwards to get going. Very embarrassing.
