Do you think life was better just after the 2nd world war?
Answers:
NO..
Life was very hard after the second world war. People were coming to terms with the enormous loss of human life and the grim task of clearing rubble and even some bodies from the rubble. There was little money to go around and a lot of disease. food rationing went on for a long time afterwards and there was a lot of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. There was a great relief the war was over though and Germany's war machine had been defeated. That is the only plus side I can think of.
There were none of the comforts that we take for granted today. You couldn't even go out and buy what food you wanted. Old people look back with fond memories but it was their youth. they would say it was good. In reality, anyone wishing to live in this time rather than today would be a glutton for punishment. IMHO.

No idea. I wasn't born until the 70's. I imagine it was better than during it though. Why is this question listed under cars & transportatin bye the way?
No, it wasn't. The austerity era of the 50s was marred with Teddy Boy gangs, no money, poor services and a lack of any of the things we take for granted now. A golden era that never was, like all 'imagined' better pasts.
Better as far as what?? Simpler maybe.
It was every body pulled together
I doubt it was, at least materially, for Germans and the Japanese.
Immediately after WWII, there were enormous social and political changes in the world. I think that generally, the world became more enlightened and respectful of human rights, but we could never say that life was free of pressures and tension.
Also, after WWII, the entitlement mentality set in for a great many of Westerners. Before WWII, the majority of people were thankful for what they "had." After WWII, it seems that the majority became resentful for what they "don't have."
people were more together and had more respect for each other
people were so happy to be alive. They thaught it was better.
Well, it SURELY was MUCH BETTER IN QUALITY, THAN IT IS TODAY.
Probably,, the freed up economic momentum meant that everybody that wanted to work could, and you could afford to buy a house and two cars on one decent salery,, try that nowadays if your not making 100k a year. Plus, everything was made here in america. Both political parties dirty little secret is that they sold america out,, sent all our jobs overseas,, even as we create new jobs,, american are very inovative,, both political parties are finding a way to sell your job to someone overseas for a bribe, be it legal or not. That's why america is in the truly sad shape it is in. All Jobs Sold. (Execpt for the service ones, that's why they want illegal imigrants).
My Uncle told me the same thing! But I still don't know why.
In 1956 we were still rationed on some foods
It wasn't until 1954 that we could buy a house
In 1952 demobbed conscripts were called back for Korea
Bomb damage was still the main vista anywhere and domestic goods were unavailable.
My war went on from September 1939 December 1947 with Home Guard and Royal Engineer's service in between.
By the time we were back to normal it was 1960.
There were still no houses to rent and unless you had at least one child you couldn't get on the housing list.
But worst of all and thanks to our lot, most of you out there can only ridicule and insult us.
We have funded all the National assets Thatcher sold off to the rich institutions.
Paid the salaries and pension plans of three generations of civil servants.
Paid for the NHS over and over until there are more chiefs than Indians.
Go cap in hand for supplementary pension after they were cut back.
Warily treat 5,000,000 newcomers in case we disturb someones political gimmick.
Yes all in all it's been a good life but it would have been 100% better if we were German living in Germany in 2006.
Funny that don't you think?
Generally - yes , but it depended on weather you had been shot or had your home blown to Bollocks or not , But at least we hadn,t been invaded by thousands and thousand of Bloody Immigrants , sponging on us and knackering our country up , oh and Hitler was Dead and that Piss Artist "Bin Laden" handn,t been heard of.
Life was harder - but folks were a lot nicer to each other.
