Why am I having difficulty in engaging gears of a toyota hiace 1988 model?

hello mate, 80s toyota's had very sticky boxes, they used an 75-90 grade oil, an easy way to to get better gear selection is put a lighter grade oil in, its been known for people to run atf oil in them, but and i do mean but, if your useing your van for heavy loads i wouldnt recomend it, it will burn out the syncros you could try a slick 50 treatment this should clean the swarf out of the box, also are you aware of the gearbox oil change every c service, thats 24k if memory serves me correct, this will make a difference alone, hope this helps mate

the gear selectors have probably worn out try and get a reconditioned box and you'll be fine
I had a problem with my toyota. it kept popping out of 4th gear then i couldnt get it into 4th. It turned out it was the synchro mesh. Was going to cost £400 to fix.
check the clutch if it is not that your gearbox is shot or else u cant drive its deffinitly 1 off the 3

There could be a number of things causing your problem but the most likely(and cheapest to remedy) is the small ball joints on the gear linkage. There are about 4 of them and you can check them by getting under the van and have another bod move the gear shift.The second cause is probably your clutch operation. It coulb be the slave cylinder located on the side of the gearbox or the master cylinder in the drivers compartment. Check to see if there is any fluid weeping out around the rubber seal on the slave cylinder. Not to expensive to replace, but if its the master cylinder, best leave it to a mechanic as its a pig of a job.
