Why are the number plates on the front of cars white and the rear plates are yellow?

Answers:
So that we can see which direction a car is facing? Maybe also to stop excess glare?
To tell which way they are pointing
So that when you are drunk you know which end is which!
The UK is the only country that has that, no other european country does that. Strange isn't it.
So that the rozzers can see whether you're coming or going when it looks like you don't know whether you're coming or going.
The rear number plates reflect the light off the car behind so the number plate can be read. the number plates on the front are white so that they do not reflect any oncoming light and means that we dont get blinded!
so they show up better at night from behind.
For the same reason that headlamps are white and tail lamps are red!
So when you look at cars like Porsches you can see which way they are pointing!

Reflective number plates, black on white to the front and black on yellow to the rear, were introduced from January 1973. I can only presume they were introduced so that the front plate did not reflect into oncoming drivers' sight.

This also helps if a car is parked facing oncoming traffic at night, technically illegal however.
