With reference to Mercedes-Benz "class letters" are equivalent to BMW "series numbers" or Ford's Model names: a way to identify product ranges. For saloons hatchbacks and estates the letters A B C E and S are used with V for MPVs and M for 4x4. Coupés and sports models don't fit into this system in a straightforward way. and the Maybach saloon model is not included in the system.

In the UK there are generally 4 classes relating specifically to cars: Saloon, Hatchback, Estate and Coupe. Of these you may get sub-classes like 'city car', '4x4', 'cabriolet' etc.

Stephen Allcraft is correct. In America we have the C-class (a compact car here), the E-class (an intermediate) and the S-class (in any country a large car) and the M-class (an SUV). BMW similarly has the 3-series, the 5-series and the 7-series. These describe the size of the car, like the two digits at the end of the Mercedes designations, usually indicate the size of the engine in liters.
Car class is done by the insurance companies. Sub-compact, cars like the Honda Fit, Compact, civic, mid size Accord, full size Mercedes S class. SUV etc.
