I have just passed my driving test and want to tow a caravan how do i get a licence to do so?
Answers:
You don't need a license to tow a vehicle. You need a sign in the back window of the vehicle being towed that says "IN TOW". You can't have anyone in the vehicle being towed. But, if you just got your license, you'd be better off not trying to tow the van. It's not easy, and it's dangerous. Be SURE to have a safety chain. You have to rent a tow bar and put it on the vehicle you're going to tow. If you don't do it just right, it can come loose and cause lots of damage. What kind of trailer hitch is on the tow vehicle? You need to have some kind of lights (brake, turn signal) on the vehicle being towed that are controled by the tow vehicle. It varies from state to state. How far do you need to tow it? If it's not to far, just pay a tow truck.
You don't need a license to tow another vehicle.
A license may not be big enough to tow a caravan. I'd say get a tow truck!!
You don't need a license to tow a car. But there are different laws in each state. You probably have to clearly mark that it is being towed (sign in rear window) and have lights on the towed car ( brake lights etc)
I think that you already can (UK). If you check the back of your photocard licence you should see some codes which correlate with different vehicles etc and I think that you can tow a caravan. I know that you can drive a tractor! lol. If in doubt check with DVLA
In the UK you won't need a licence, but because you've only just passed your test your insurance might be huge.
i'm not sure but i dont think you need a license to tow unless your driving a tow truck.
Save us all please and forget the idea. You only just passed your test
OK, making the connection like many others don't seem to that you're on uk.answers and aren't talking about a big arab camel train or a three-bedroom "mobile" (ahem) home.
1/ Please, please, please do not. Find some alternative holiday accomodation if you can. It's a dreadful way of spending what should be an enjoyable break, and every other road user will look down on you as total scum. A Eurocamp semi-permanent tent is an exciting and actually quite comfortable alternative.
2/ Also please do not seeing as you have just passed your test. I've been driving 7 years now and I'd see it as a new challenge to be taken on and treated with some respect now that I'm a lot more competent with handling the car (which is badly affected by having a half ton of recalitrant metal slung off it's tailgate) and dealing with dangerous / emergency situations (which towing a caravan chucks a whole load more of, not least the dreaded tip-over). and parking! (reverse parking a trailer is a black art)
3/ If you are actually serious and will still be going through with it no matter what caveats we throw at you - go talk to the friendly folk in your local test centre and/or DVLA office. I'd be a bit stuck and have to look it up in yellow pages, but you'll have started / ended your test at the place so it's location should be fairly fresh in your mind. They'll sort you out properly.
As far as I can recall, getting a category A (private car) license in the UK also automatically gave you other entitlements - e.g. provisional motor scooter license (could drive a 50cc without training), caravan and trailer towing etc. A lot of these have long since been revoked, certainly the scooter and trailer ones even before I did my test back in '99! (yes, i'd have to go to the test centre too). You now have to have some kind of training and pass a proficiency test of some sort, probably. Or at least ask them nicely so they can put you on register of authorised nutters :-)
dont need one in most states.rent a car dolly or trailer.they have lights wired in.in some states you have to do it during the day it you do it with just a chain but make sure the brake lights work in the car being towed.
If you are in the UK then please ignore most previous advice. As you have just passed your test then you will need to take a further test to enable you tow any trailer over 750 kg`s which applies to almost all caravans.Only those that passed their test before 01/01/1997 are automatically allowed to tow more than this 750kg.Further info can be found at dvla.gov.uk
