VW Beetle v smaller & more economical car?

I used to own a fiat punto - went for miles on very little petrol. I now own a new VW Beetle and love the way it looks, but with a 2.0 injection engine - it costs me a fortune to run in comparison.

So, what do you think, keep the Beetle, or go back to a smaller city car??

Answers:
A 2.0 litre engine is unlikely to get any more than 25 mpg if you are only driving around town. It would be te same for any make. On a run then 35+mpg would be reasonable.
When selling the VW look at how much money you would lose by trading in, estimate how many miles you do per year. If you do under 5000 miles per year the differnce per week in fuel is probably less than you would lose if you sold the Bug. Also Bugs hold their value much better than most other cars.
Time to do some maths!
5000 miles per year at 25mpg is 200 gallons
5000 miles per year at 35mpg is 142 gallons
At 4 quid per gallon the differnce is 4.50 per week.not much extra to drive a Bug!! Obviously, if you do 10000 per year then its 9.00 extra! Im sure you get the jist.
All the best
the cheaper one, because it sounds like you need to save money for something
I am assuming you are in Europe based upon your question. I am in the United States, and small cars are rarer here, but I have always liked them. I drive a Golf and love it, but I wouldn't mind moving down into a Polo. If you like the feel of the Beetle, try the Polo. If it is more a question of style, stick with the Beetle if you can afford it, becuase it is a very distincitve car. Otherwsie, go back to a city car, but maybe try one of the German or Japanese makes, as Fiat's have a poor reliability reputation (again, that is in the U.S.).

Oh, I almost forgot.can you find a diesel Beetle? And the new Golf in Europe has a twin charged engine, with a turbo and supercharger for better fuel economy. You may want to check that out as well.
Where in Europe are you?We have a diesel Beetle that gets great economy. The 2.0 should be getting close to 30 miles to the gallon. If not,you need to have it checked out.You want better, then check out a Pollo.I am hopful to soon be able to sell the Pollo in the US.vwjcook@yahoo.com
keep the beetle! They're awesome!
Smaller cars are better but if you want the best of both worlds why not try a 1.6 or 1.4 litre engine size, as they aren't as weedy as a 1.0 litre but offer better economy than a 2.0 litre. As for the beetle bear this in mind- it was developed on the same platform as the AUDI TT and VW Golf, and as such wasn't designed to be an economical car, rather as a response to the resurgence in retro cars.
I OWN A 1996 VW JETTA, WHICH HAS SET IDLE IN MY YARD FOR SIX MONTHS, BECAUSE REPAIRING IT IS SO EXPENSIVE. I LOVE THE VW BUT TO REPAIR IT WILL BANKRUPT YOU. ALSO TO KEEP IT SERVICE IS A HOLE IN THE POCKET TOO. GAS WISE IT WAS GREAT, WHEN GAS WAS REASONABLE. I HATE TO DEPART FROM IT, BUT I HAD TO GET A CHEAPER CAR TOO. TODAY WITH GAS PRICIBS GOING THROUGH THR ROOF, I SUGGEST ANY CAR WHICH WOULD BE A SAVINGS TO YOUR POCKET.IS THE WAY TO GO.. REPAIRS AND SERVICE FOR VW ARE JUST AS EXPENSIVE AS GAS..

ALSO IT IS VERY HARD TO REPAIR A VW, BECAUSE FEW SHOPS WANT TO DEAL WITH THEM, IT SEEMS VW BUILD CARS ONLY THEIR DEALERSHIPS CAN REPAIR,
if it is costing you that much i would trade it in for something with better gas mileage. you can always stick within the vw line though
beetle coz there sooo much cooler.
keep the beetle
Go and have a look at the golf Mk.4
