Why isn't anyone in the UK standing up against the rising prices of petrol like people did in the late 90's?

Apathy.. we tried it once, it looked good, didn't change a bloody thing so why bother again ?
Individuals are intelligent but crowds are stupid. You might be disgusted at the petrol price, so am I, so is probably anyone you ask. But we're not clever when it comes to a mass protest. Perhaps we need more practice ?
Maybe because people care about the environment more? Or know that a protest won't really change much? I dunno, but I won't be protesting.

People in the UK are too intoxicated on drugs and alcohol to stand up for any reason unless they run out of drugs and alcohol.

because it won't do us the slightest bit of good..it's an easy way for Blair and Brown to rip us off.
Probably because they feel it won't do any good.
Incidentally, there was a World Naked Bike Ride held on 10 June (including London, Leeds and other UK cities) to protest against fuel dependency.
I don't have a car so I don't care how much it is :)
