Hiya, anyone have advice on buying a 2002/3 YZF R1?
are there any known probs to watch out for with an 02/03 R1? It has a K&N i believe and an Akropovic. Ta Declan

buy one without the k&n and exhaust, it should have been rejetted /remapped with that lot on and chances are its had the **** wrung out of it.
try for standard bike, then you can mod it yourself if you wish.
most R1's of that year would have been dropped a few times ..
Check everything and the sump plug ( it may have been drilled for track racing ).
Also Clutches burn out fast so at tick over pull the clutch in and listen for any change in Engine noise.. the should be NO change.

get a compression gauge, pull the spark plugs and one by one check each cylinders compression, if you have a differance of more than five pounds between any of the cylinders dont buy it.

The R1 has has some problems with the gear box. Mainly 2nd gear.
