Why do people in the USA get petrol so cheap compared to us in the UK. We pay around $9.00 a gallon in the UK.
Answers:
Because the government are greedy & tax it
Taxes. But we're also the ones who drive huge SUV's and then complain about gas prices rising.
try looking at UK's import tax rate and it's VAT tax that's most likely where the main difference is
well you can buy smokes (cigarette's) from Russia via Internet for $1.50 a pack figure that out same company as here same stuff
The reason why gas is so much higher in the UK is because that is the way the United Kingdom pays for their health care. The United States does not have a system like that, Unfortunately.
it call comodity.the more the country buy,the more discount it get.since USA is bigger than your tiny country,do your math.
we invade countries that have oil , you don't
I agree wit petebolos. this proves Bush is a loser!
We have much lower taxes on gasoline and diesel than you do. The general European idea is to tax heavily, and therefore deter people from driving as much. This is good for the environment, but also not as big a deal as much of Europe’s population is a lot more concentrated (everything is closer to other things) and public transportation is better. The high cost of gas encourages people to find alternative means of getting around, which they can do enough to lessen the burden. My family lives in Austria and when I am there I almost never drive. I drive from the country to the city, but when in either it is all on foot, by public transportation, and occasionally by taxi. It’s easy and it’s cheaper.
In the US the idea is to facilitate transportation. The US is much bigger and things are a lot farther apart. Public transportation is also not as strong, partially because it is hard to build a good public transportation network over large, diffuse areas, and partially because of bad policy. All of this means that people have no choice but to drive more, and would still drive similar amounts if gas were 9 USD/gallon. We would just really suffer on the economic side. Transportation costs would skyrocket (and therefore prices), people would have to spend an even higher percentage of their income on transportation (I already spend 150 USD per month on gas on about three tanks. Spending three times that would be a real hardship for many families) and therefore have less for other living costs, etc. Congress is currently considering a bill to increase the required fuel efficiency for cars here, which I think is a great idea, as are measures to encourage the development of alternate fuel sources. For the US, this will have to be the approach as taxing more to make people drive less just isn’t feasible given the geography and transportation network of this large, diffuse country. You can argue for better urban planning, which might also help, but in the end not enough people live in urban areas to solve this issue even if they were made into transportation utopias, which they won’t become anyway.
Yes, approximately 80% of the price we pay is tax, but it also comes down to the fact that since the USA is considerably bigger in area than the UK much more petrol is used, therefore profit margins can be cut. The thing about our health service is a cloudy issue. In the UK many things are taxed to the extreme - as an example cigarettes, approximately $9.45 a pack at todays exchange rate. It has been shown that the tax revenue from cigarettes pays for the health service many times over (and certainly covers the cost of treating smokers). And this from a non smoker.
