Does anybody no of the problems to look out for when buying a fiat punto gt?
Answers:
Fiat Punto Gt is still a performing and reliable car.
Leaving aside all the stereotypes about the lack of reliability of Fiat cars i would advise you to check the following.
1) Electric system (Fiat's weak side till the Punto 1st Series)
2) Suspensions (Especially if the previous owner wasn't very careful
3) Plastic assemblies (The plastics in that generation of Fiat were one step forward compared to previous series, like UNO, yet still pretty poor compared to the competing models of that period, like Polo, and similar to that of french cars, like Citroen and Peugeot). Those plastics tend to "creak'n squeak", which is why many consider Fiat unreliabile cars.
4) Many Punto GT owners drove it hard and didn't like to maintain it properly. So, before purchasing a car that may disappoint you, check if there are any water/oil leaks in the head, and if the engine has been recently washed, wonder why it has been washed (the ownwer could have done that to hide the leaks). For the rest, the advices of those who typed before me are pretty Ok.
If i were you i'd check also for a Punto HGT. I owned both and can tell you the HGT is much more stable, with a more direct steering and only 1 single flaw, which is TIMING BELT, that has to be changed at about 60k kms. For the rest it's a great small sporty car.
Good Luck and have fun
In actual fact, the engine is pretty reliable. Derived from that of the UNO TURBO i.e. and updated with a new Electronic Injection System plus adapted for the use with catalyzer, the model has been sold pretty a lot in Italy and NO OWNER ever complained about it, in terms of performances and road stability, excepted a certain softness of standard suspensions, that were not considered up to the engine by many road race fanatics (And i personally agree, although driving in Italian roads having suspensions that are too rigid is never advisable).
The main thing u have to look out for when buying any fiat is how good the electrics are as the electrics in fiats is the first thing to go
http://www.fiatforum.com/ shud help u need to join but its free and they give al sorts of advice on their
Problem number 1.It's a Fiat.
The two biggest things to look at on one of those are:
1) crawl under and make sure the oil pan has not been dented from bottoming out.when this happens, the oil sump will be starved and it will cause major internal damage to the engine which you cannot see
2) have someone start the engine and hold it at various RPMs whilst you listen for taps (valves) or knocks (rods) under the hood
I have owned several Fiats, and you really have to be careful.they are easily damaged by overheating/lack of oil
have you ever heard of fiat stands for fix it again tony
Yes!, it's a Fiat.
