Answers:
I noticed that the other day.. and I dont know!
Makes a change from smelling of pee from all the leaking sewer pipes.

The unusual odour of the Deep level tube lines has been noticed ever since the opening of the Central London Railway (IIRR 1899). It's endemic to the system.
As per the US correspondent. The Tube moves vast numbers of London Commuters, but the system is definitely showing its age.
