Is a fireblade any good for touring?
Answers:
Hi Adrian. In theory you can tour on any machine, I've toured on ZXR's, GSXR's and allsorts. ARE you in the uk? if so then what i am going to recommend will make more sense!.
The problem with a fireblade is that it has no consessions to either comfort or luggage so heres how I would prepare the bike.
Look on sites such as ebay or M&P for the following:
Gel pad for the riders seat, nice squishy pad that adds comfort, straps to the seat, about £30
several luggage options here depending on if you're taking a pilion and how much stuff your taking:
Oxford sports panniers. Designed for sports bikes, have bottoms that sweep upwards to better match the angle of sports bike exhausts, are expandable and are great value. £70 ish
they also do matching tankbags.
Rennetec sports rack, adds a grabrail and small rack to the bike, great for strapping your bag/rucksack/tent etc £45ish
or if you want to spend some serious money try a Ventura system. This is a grabrail that bolts to the bike, the top of the rail interchanges with a shoulder high rack that a special bag(s) slip over. this can be rested on the back seat or if you have a pillion can be placed behind them.
Scottoiler, fit one! I have a 1986 honda fitted with one.it has the original chain and sprockets fitted and still needs no adjustment (do i have to say any more!) £75
Think of changing the screen to a flip up or double bubble type to deflect more air.
Fit renthal softgrips of some gel grips, much kinder to the palms!
if your tyres are worn get a sports touring set fitted, these are harder than pure sports, wear out less quickly and still offer knee down grip!
Lastly think about what to wear too, you may look great in one piece leathers but thier a pain in the *** for toilet breaks! Try two piece leather or fabric suit (id take fabric, just as protective and breaths better, more pockets too!)
Get a pair of touring boots. these have a spongier thicker heel and more padding than a sports boot, helps cope with the vibes that kill ya feet dead! (better to walk about in too!)
wish ya luck in your travels, just dress comfortable, go at your pace and stop when you need to , not when the bike does!
a bike where your butt is higher than your head is not good for touring.
Its not a touring bike, so no it wont be , it'll soon become very uncomfortable.
Try bikes like BMW's RT, LT. Honda's Pan Euro,NT650V Deauville.Yamaha's FJR1300, FJ1200. Triumphs 1200 Trophy.Harley's FL HR Road King to mention a few, hope its of some help.
Scrumptious bike but no good at all for touring. You cant carry spare clothes, toiletries, tent and all that gear, the riding position is not suitable for long distance either, and you have no weather protection. You need something that will take panniers and cruise at a decent speed, where your backside isnt stuck up in the air!
By the looks of things, no!
You can tour on a Fireblade, no problem. preperation is the key
