My trike came back from being repaired and was a totally different colour- I hate it- what can I do??

I ride a Nippi 125cc trike designed for disabled riders. An accident in January meant it had to go back to Nippi for repair. It was sprayed in a really marvellous "flip" paint, irridiscent and really beautiful. It came back with a purple/blue pearl finish! I HATE purple, and it looks cheap..the "flip" paint spray cost me £1000. Should I contact the insurance company about this?? The Nippi manager knows about this, as I told him when he brought the bike back. The trouble is, thay are a long way from where I live. I really hate this colour so much that I havent been out on the bike since it came back 3 weeks ago. Help!!

The correct procedure is to contact the the repairer 1st. If they refuse or state that they can't match the custom paint you will need to report the matter then to the insurer.

However you do have a much more serious problem if the insurer did not know in advance of the paint work.

If you did not report the custom paint at a cost of £1000 to the insurer at inception or renewal you have withheld material information and in-fact the insurer can void the policy completely or at least not deal with the claim until the correct premium is paid. The insurer only covers the standard vehicle unless modifications are notified. You can look at it this way, the custom paint work will make the vehicle more desirable to thieves, yet the risk has not been properly notified.

Now, if the insurer does know of your custom paint job, then they have accepted the risk and they must arrange for someone like the people who did the original work to reinstate the vehicle to the way it was prior to the incident. the only caveat here is if the additional cost makes the vehicle uneconomic to repair. At the very least the existing repairer had a moral duty to inform you what was going to happen then you could have influenced the outcome.
Are you sure it is the original trike and not a replacement?
Contact the insurance company.
Explain what happened & enclose photos of how it looked before of possible.
If the repair was not so radical that the entire trike had to be replaced then I think you have a good case.
Good Luck.
If they resprayed it without your consent/ not the way you specified then you should insist that they return it to it's original colour and refund any money you paid towards a respray. You have every right to demand this. If they give you any hassle about it contact a citizens advice bureau and they will help make sure you get what you are entitled to.

Sounds like either they have completely resprayed the trike (unlikely) or they have given you a different trike back (very likely). Either way, the insurance company should sort this out. Did you sign anything to tell Nippi they could supply a replacement trike? I don't think so! Contact the insurance company immediately. Get them to talk to Nippi as soon as possible.
