i have heard you can change / set different functions on the main ignition key buttons (i.e. change setting from opening all 4 doors to just open one)
it is a 2000 x reg .
how is this done? Do i have to take it to a garage? how much does this cost?

yes - it's called "car/key memory". it has to be done at the dealer and they charge about a 1/2 hour of labor. they will give you a sheet with all the choices and then code your car.
