How long do motor-scooters last for?

Just noticing that your average 50cc job (and generally those up to 125cc too) doesn't seem to stick around for long. You might see many new ones on sale for £1000 or £2000, and one or two barely used second hand ones for about 2/3rds that if you're lucky, but rarely anything too old (or cheap!) on the road or in the classifieds. I'd like to get one but that's the kind of money I'd currently spend on changing my car, rather than buying a bike to experiment with (and wouldn't like to see it all disappear if it becomes unsaleable in two years, or give up the car!). Am I just looking in the wrong places, or do they burn out irrepairably really quickly?
PS any reccomendations? And would it be best to go straight for a 125 rather than mucking about with a dangerously anaemic 50, as i'm in my 20s with a well-established license etc?

If you maintain them well, and get a good brand like Honda or Kawasaki, they can last for a very long time, at least for 10 years if that is not your primary mode of transportation.
no they last for ages
buy a 125
The biggest problem with scooters is the little tow rags who nick them, after all for something that costs about £1000 new the chances of it not getting written off if it's stolen are very slim.

There are auction sites in the UK that sell off stolen recovered scooters pretty cheap always good if you want spares, I think the Police have one.
Is your well established license for a car, with a provisional entitlement for a max 125cc bike? if so do youself a favour. get your CBT, if you are over 21 pass a DAS course and get yourself a proper bike.

Scooters with small wheels are about as stable a brick on top of a knitting needle.

Most of the smaller scooters don't last too long as they are bought by parents for little son/daughter who promptly hammer the hell out of them with no respect for the machinery.
Beware of two strokes, they are prone to engine siezure,And yes I am talking from experience. Go for a water cooled 4 stroke scooter and dont bother with a 50cc if you can legaly ride a 125cc machine as they are quite nippy (65-70mph), watch the exhaust as they rust quickly. You can maximise an exhausts life by spraying it every year with special high temperature paint. If you maintain your scooter it will last many years. Happy scootering!!
all depends on the driver ?!
A good 125cc like a Piaggio will last for ages provided you do your part; use the best synthetic engine oil money can buy, service it regularly- if you don't know how, take it to a man who does; don't hammer it at top speed everywhere, keep it clean and park it dry. Having had a 50cc before my 125, the difference is incredible; I can keep up with the traffic instead of slowing and finishing up getting nudged into the gutter, it is far more comfortable to ride, and much safer in traffic as its not fast enough to get you into trouble, but is fast enough to get you out of it!! Best wishes.
i've had mine for 5 yrs.its a new go pad..
the shorter time the better in my book, put your cash into something with a bit of oomph that will put a smile on your face at the end of the day.
