I am a bit confussed, I had a simlar incident and the courtesy car co had their own insurance so was able to drive away there and then.
What has the dvla got to do with all of this? If the car insurance is providing the courtesy car then it is an insurance issue not dvla.
Yes I agree if a car is wrote off then they, dvla need to be informed.
Basically, from you are insured to drive the courtesy car then drive my dear you will be legal.
