Was the 318cu in mopar V8 any good?

The 318 was a fantastic engine, very durable, easy to tune, and a great base for hot-rodding. It was pressed into duty in many fleet vehicles and almost always outlived the chassis.
In the old Mopars, the 318 fared much better in the A-Bodies (pre 70 barracudas, Darts, Dusters, Demons, Swingers, Valiants) because of the lighter weight. A 318 in a 4200# Charger is not going to generate the off-the-line torque that a 440 would, of course, but it was a respectable power plant. I had a 318 in a 1970 Barracuda and it was no slouch - in it's day it gave many a Mustang and Camaro a taillight dinner. You can push an e-body (challenger, cuda) into the 13.xx range with a naturally aspirated 318. Not bad! There are stroker kits which change the displacement and can end up putting out over 400hp. Or if you want, just sit back and enjoy the reliability and good gas mileage.
The 318 was a veritable work horse used in a lot of utility vehicles for years.And was very easy to modify for performance.With a small effort you could get a lot of horses out of the 318.and you could get fuel economy as well.my parents even had an ELDORADO MOTOR HOME with a 318 engine good power but no mileage due to the application it was used for but great power and durability.I at one time owned a 76 CHRYSLER CORDOBA i got 22 mpg highway 16 mpg average in the city it was 2barrel carbureted .I sold it with 180,000 miles on it years ago .I wish I had it now with todays gas prices. A 318 is a very durable power plant
