the car you need is a smart car crash tested by top gear at 70 mph and it bust the concrete barrier 2 foot thick damage to the car was to the front end only driver compartment was OK a strong little car
Smart. Easy on fuel? check. Low cost/low insurance? check. Hard wearing and last a while? It is one of the most reliable and most hard working cars in europe. I can't say for sure, I live in america. But I know that you can remove and replace any of the panels in a different place. It also has a pride factor. The only downside is that if you get into an accident with a heavier, bigger car (truck, Suv, Sedan), a smart would be creamed because of it is so light, but the other car is so heavy.

Go for a Focus. Parts are cheap and plentiful (if you ever need any) as I think Zetec engines may just be indestructible.

Actually, maybe not. YOU may get 'creamed' as they say, but the CAR might not as it is actually very rigid. Saying that though, if the car does not crumple, then all the energy of the crash would be transfered to you.
Compare all the above with a Proton and a Perodua, it is cheap, great on the mileage, waranty periods are mind bogling and both are Mitsubishi and Daihatsu respectively.

yeah it is made in Malaysia, but both are rebadge Japanese makes.
How small do you want to go?

I'm bias here, I love Fords, have always had them and they have never let me down. Starts first time, every time.
Try the Ka, for low tax, fuel consumption, Mondeo for strength and stamina, Galaxy, which I have, for lots of people.
All are very strong and will last a good 7 - 8 years with regular maintenance, until the garage bills become more expensive than buying another car.
I would say one of the best small car to buy if you don't want to pay alot for insurance would be a 1990's Ford Fiesta diesel. They are low maintenance and cheaper to run than the petrol equivalent. Also they are British built, so the parts won't be expensive.
Another good car to buy would be a Rover. Although the company has gone bust, the parts are still widely available and they are cheap.
