At cruising altitude they can do approximatelly 900km/h. However, this is the airspeed (ie the speed through the air); if there is a tail wind the wind velocity will add to the airspeed of the plane and produce a higher ground speed. Hence, when you fly from America to Europe the flight is quicker because of the almost permanent westerly winds.
