exactly. They are all pretty much the same, all have equal performance (within micro differences), and all cost about the same in each catagory. If you are not racing on a track and worried about what the latest and greatest machinery is then go with your gut. Pick something different like a Moto Guzzi or something.
Most people decide by:
1. Brand loyalty - they buy what they or someone they trust bought before regardless of its virtues or lack thereof (Harley).
2. looks/color - the Yamaha R bikes sell well because they look good, not as many people buy green bikes.
3. price - other than people that buy MV's and Ducati R's to impress others the price of a bike will be a major factor.
4. capacity - people wrongly assume bigger is better but if it doesn't look good or the price is too high they look for something smaller.
5. ignorance - people often buy out of peer pressure, either to buy a certain brand (Harley) or pressure from the dealer. Often times you will be convinced to upgrade a little, and then a little more and then you end up with the most expensive thing on the floor.
6. more ignorance - Very few dealers can afford to keep test bikes for you to try. You must read a magazine article bike review written by a professional motorcyclist or racer. They tell you things that you otherwise would never know about a bike like how fast it is or how well it handles. These things you may never fully realize or appreciate even after owning the bike for years.
Buy the bike you like. Don't let someone tell you what to buy.

Harley doesn't make racing bikes, so that suggestion is moot.
In my opinion, there's not a whole lot of difference between them. One brand is as good as another. It really comes down to looks and ergonomics.
Choose the one whose looks you like the best. Then sit on it - does it feel ok? Then look at the price.
You really don't need to put much more thought into it than that at this stage.
