If your vehicle has a rear windshield washer you can turn it so it doesn't squirt on the rear windshield, but instead shoots a stream up and behind your vehicle. If they get too close let them have it! They'll get the idea. If someone gets behind me and is tailgating I slow down to a crawl and let them pass. I think that's safer than allowing them to tailgate at high speed.

Rig a switch to activate your brake lights. You turn it on, they think you're braking. It's great!

I let others by, and use the slower lanes when I drive my PoS. But when I'm in vehicles with real engines, I rarely have folks tail gating unless there in a real hurry. Even though I drive in LA, I give courtesy to other drivers.
