Vw golf 2.8 how good are they?

The 2.8 engine is noisy by comparison with similar cars .Reliabilty is good providing servicing carried out to VW specification.It is a little under geared on motorway driving the quality has improved of late do not take notice of the doom merchants they have probably never driven a VW.Regards Mick UK.

Volkswagons are great cars, they go for ever, very reliable, I reckon you can't go wrong with a golf - they are my favourite cars so ok, I'm biased, but I have only ever heard good things about them and my personal experience is that they are great to drive.
VW is not very reliable at all.
the 2.8 is known to suffer cam chain failure at around 80-100 thousand miles, its a big job so check if its been done.
I have a VW MK4 Golf. Absolutly beautiful car. I have a 1.4 16v and its nippy enough, drivers lovely, looks lovely, feels lovely. You cant go wrong. But obviously look around 1st. The one you buy could of had a boy racer behind it! Mines 2003 so relitively new. No probs so far
