What is the biggest size rims I can fit on my 1.8 Alfa 156 without having to do any modifications?

Don't overdo it!!
If you put rims on that are too big you will ruin the ride and handling characteristics of what is usually a super-smooth sports-tourer - potentially to a point that may make it dangerous.

18s look good.

However, if you're only doing supermarket car-park burnouts, fill your chav-tastic boots!
If you really had one you would know, 21" before having to do some fender modifications.

little boys and thier toys aye..? does it matter?
umm if u cant fit 20's why even put rims
Changing wheel size is a tricky thing. You can probably get away with 17's or 18's, but anything past stock is going to cause future problems.

What the people don't know that put the biggest, widest wheel they can find on a car is something called a scrub radius. It is the angle at which the wheels center meets up with the angle of the steering knuckle. Ideally, that point should be precisely at the point of where the wheel touches the ground in the center of the wheel.
When you put too big a wheel on, it throws this angle off, putting extra stress on the knuckle, bearings and cv joints. That will cause horrible handling and premature wear of those parts which will cost you a lot of money.

What really cracks me up is that style that is popular on the west coast where they make the wheels stick out way past the fender. Not only will their suspension last about a year before they have to replace a dozen parts, but they put way too small tires on the rim to get a certain look. What that does is create an extremely dangerous situation because it reduces the stress a tire can withstand. Which could lead to a blowout.

You're better off with the stock rim size. Engineers go to great lengths at figuring out all this stuff. You should leave it alone.
19 inch rims with max 40mm tyres of any width is doable.
18inch wheels including low profile tyres is usually the same size as normal car wheels as they have huge tyres so 18inches would in most cases of saloon cars would be the same diametre as the original wheels.
