Why do people who live in cities drive large 4x4 (SUVs) vehicles?

To compensate for the sense of inferiority they plainly feel. Who else needs bull-bars in Somerfields' car park? Not many bulls or rhinos down my way, dunno about you!
Because they're arrogant idiots mostly. I hate those things and the people that drive them.

Wish I knew the answer to that one, and I have to say if one more lady in one these vehicles decides to just swap lanes without indicating I might not be alive much longer! They always seem to have young children as well - they are a danger and a menace!
Some of it is status. More than anything, people feel less safe driving in cities - the driving position in an SUV is much higher and makes them feel less exposed. That's what my boss says about his X3 anyway!
I'm not condoning it, just explaining it.
Because it is a status thing. It says "I am well off". It says " I am better than you". It says "I have more disposable income than you and I can afford a car that only does 12MPG". It is all about image and status. It says "I am going places". It says" I am alright jack f@@k you". And they might be able to afford a better car than a Fiat punto.

looke at them when they are parked! most of them have disabled stickers on them. if you see them then dont think they are all pulling a fast one (lots are) as most disabilities are not obvious!lots of disabilty cars are rented using benefits that are applied for and can take several months to obtain!

All Marketing studies say that it is because the people with the 4X4 feel more secure, and they usually have homes protected with alarms.
To make themselves feel a cut above the rest of us, hog all the parking space, damage adjoininng cars, flash money they may or may not have, guzzle more fuel, and infuriate us.
They should be taxed at a special rate according to their postcode. Rural areas less, mid city highest.
easy 1 to keep them and there family safe ( 3 tons of metal is farly safe if you crash) and 2 with all the speed bumbs and things in citys now a sports car is no use so a 50 grand 4x4 says ive got money and i can go to the shops with out getting stuck on the car park entry :)
but please bare in mind there are ppl out there who needs the off road abilty for work or fun and not all 4x4s just got to shops or schools and home again mine dont
well were I live we have bad winters, snow for 2 months of the year. but most drive them here with "Bull" bars on the front, which I always thought should be illegal, since if you hit a pedestrian you would kill them at low speeds, and go threw any small car in a crash. so why do the company's have to spend so much money crash testing them, just for some idiot to buy a Bull bar just so their prestige 4X4 doesn't get damaged. Then you have the answer! I have a bigger vehicle than you don't argue with me. I can't drive a larger vehicle to feel like I can intimidate you. so this big strong looking 4X4 will give me a feeling of power so you will look at me and stay away. As an Ex Truck and coach driver you met them trying to ague and bully the big trucks.

The same reason they drive Mercs, Ferraris, BMW's Transit vans or any other large vehicle. Because they want to. If you had plenty of money, would you drive a Fiesta? Would you heck. The only reason people don't like 4X4's is because they haven't got one. 4X4's are safer, better to drive, economical and comfortable. Most cost no more to run than a 2X4, and at the end of the day the few that are a bit heavy on juice pay more in tax to subsidise you lot in your upholstered roller skates. Get your facts right before coming on here and voicing your predjudices.
To promote their individuality, of course. I'm not crazy about them either; but if they want to deal with headaches of parking and paying the higher prices for gas; more power to them. All I can say is that the party's almost over for the SUV crowd. Fuel economy standards are going legislate them into the history books.
Because they want to. Why do You care anyway? People drive sports cars, but they're not on a racing track. Do You feel the same way about off-road motorbikes? I didn't think so. I bet most of the anti-4x4 lefties would love a nice shiny 4x4 with an interior so plush that it makes their own car look like a prison vehicle. I don't own a 4x4, nor do i want one, I'm happy with my noisy boyracer car complete with annoying stereo. 10 out of 10 for such an original question.
For men it is to make up for having tiny dicks.
For women it is because they are cretins.
If they hit somebody or V.V. in those ludicrously crowded streets they come off best because they are strongly built.
