Why are traffic jam occurances on the rise?

seems to be more traffic than usual on the M1.

Answers:
more people on the road
people are more richer now.
more people are travellng alone and so roads are busier its not just the m1 its every where
More bad drivers on the roads.
People are richer now because making money online is so easy
It's the same everywhere, and it will only get worse. More people passing their driving tests (due to absolutely no faith in any other transport system) more immigrants to the nation (each bringing a car - usually with the trademark PL as a national id mark, and generally unroadworthy and uninsured) You don't say what stretch of the M1 you use - my guess is you are down by Luton / Milton Keynes (dunno why) but they might as well fix permanent cones to this section as the road construction is about 40 years out of date, and will never be of any worth. Foreign trucks, which move at unrestricted high speeds between stop / start traffic cause massive queues behind them (and there are now more foreign commercials grossing at 44 tonnes on UK roads, than GB registered ones - usually driven by people of whom we have no knowledge of their age, ability or origin (just check every time you pass a minor or major shunt on the motorway, you can almost guarantee that there will be a foreign vehicle amongst the carnage)
More traffic and more roadworks. Everyone in a hurry to get somewhere = congestion
Population is up Didn't you hear in the news last week.. The government just celebrated the 10 Billionth person born in the world.
Because the Government takes ever more money from ever more motorists but does not spend it on the roads.
That why they changes the words 'Road Fund Licence' to 'Vehicle Excise Duty'.
Spinners all.
RoyS
Too many cars. Too many lorries. More accidents. More breakdowns. Not enough funding from the government to build new decent roads or improve existing ones quickly and efficiently. Adverse weather conditions. Inefficient contractors. Multiple utilities companies digging up roads separately. More traffic lights, speed traps and speed restrictions. Warnings left on gangways on motorways when there is no longer a hazard. Drivers playing power games and determined to stay in the fast lanes at a slow speed to control others.Too many bad and careless drivers.. Just to name a few causes..
Well, in MY state, people can come here and get on welfare, plus the weather is pretty good year 'round, plus, there is no satisfactory transit system you can use unless you live only a few miles from work.

SO, all these new-comers have to DRIVE on freeways that were designed for 1/4 of the traffic on them.
1 is due to more cars on the road

second is due to bad driving, congestion comes from people not leaving enough space for others to get in, at a junction people in lane 1 drive so close to each other that cars joining cant get in, so force themselves in, cars in lane 1 either brake or force themselves to lane2, causing people in lane 2 to brake! this braking effect travels back through the traffic like a wave, and causing congestion! its madness and annoying
