Oyster Cards?

Hi, just wondering if anybody out there knows why an oyster card for the london transport network is called an oyster card! Sure its probably commonly known but its buggin me!

maybe you get the best value for money when there's an R in the month. LOL

Oh wait - maybe it's something to do with 'the world's your oyster'. Maybe London's your oyster with an Oyster card.
it is a simple looking thing but has something very valuable inside it (your money/a pearl for real oysters). Oyster cards should be used for everything! we wouldn't need change, and we wouldn't need to open our wallets to use them, like with credit cards.
because if you get on a bus or train in london your squashed like you were in a oyster shell
Maybe because in Hong Kong it is called the Octopus Card, it makes more sense.
"the oyster protects a pearl in much the same way that the card protects the cardholder's money."
