Should taxi drivers need to take driving assessments / tests and have their driving abilities regularly OK'd

i wanted to say confirmed not OK'd but it was to long a word - know taxi drivers are supposed to be licensed but i dont think that this license is to do with driving ability it's to do with paying for the priviledge of driving a taxi for profit - should they also have there ability to drive safely checked as it is with bus drivers

Answers:
well they shd cost it do affect us passengers as well and other road users some can be downright nasty
i think they should have regular assessments - espcially the way they drive around here!
Yes I do-- taxi drivers are a nuisance, they think they own the road and they dont. My family previously have had run ins with these drivers.

And they should be a little more cafreful by allowing children to ride without seat belts and booster seats installed.
they do in berkshire!
I run an equality training company and we run courses for taxi drivers to learn about diversity and their legal obligations. We get taxi drivers who cannot speak English (they learn pigeon english to get through their communications exam), we get people who use their relatives licenses to pass and we have had several near misses just when they are leaving our premises. Many of them have foreign licenses (that cannot be checked) and send relatives to do their driving test for license anyway. The whole thing needs to be redone.

At the moment the local government has a duty to grant licenses to everybody who fulfills the basic criteria and doesn't have the funds to do many checks.

Basically all public service (bus/ taxi/ train) should have to have regular driving tests as should people over 70. After all peoples lifes are at risk!
The ones here in Germany for sure as well their heads !
my husband is a taxi driver, although he tell children to put seat belts on, thats all he can do, at the end of the day its the parents who should tell them..they have police checks and all the rest but no they dont have a driving test, i think they should as well.
Taxi drivers, and bus drivers think they are bullet proof and some of them drive crazy.I know bus drivers have certain rights as they have to stick to their schedule and you have to give them right of way, but taxis are simply motorists like anyone else and the only rights i see that they have is --their set down parking bays.--They can park wherever , and we cant enter theirs. Some taxi drivers are good drivers, and hey, where would we be without them, but the days of speeding to satisfy the customer should have gone out with the 60s.
Yes, they're professional drivers with people's lives in their hands, so if doctors have to get reassessed, so should Taxi and truck drivers and bus drivers. (I'm also for random drug/alcohol checks for those three professions by their employers) Too much is at stake when these tired drivers have other deficiencies too.
Yes, especially in China, Hong Kong, and Mexico.
