Whats so good about driving?

I am partially sighted and therefore cant drive. I can understand why people would want to drive to get somewhere, but I am wondering, what is so pleasureable about driving that people woiuld just get in thier cars and drive for 'fun'?

All I can see is that they would get stuck in that car park they call the M25.

I enjoy driving. It can be a nice way to get to see places that you wouldn't see when using public transport, including remote areas such as mountains and cliffs. I also find that sometimes it can help take my mind off things if I'm having issues in my life. And of course for some people they enjoy driving at speed (thrill factor). I like driving fast, but within speed limits of course.

To an extent it also depends on where you live. I live just outside of Belfast in Northern Ireland and I hate our transport company Translink. They have improved in recent times, but I find their service is just not good enough. The trains are most often late where I live, and sometimes they don't come at all. The busses are a bit better, but recently the driver of the bus I was on did not get stop when I requested it. Instead he missed 3 stops, leaving me almost a mile from when I first pressed that button. If you feel that your public transport is not good enough then it is naturally going to encourage you to use your car or bike. Suppose you had to take the bus or train to get to an interview and they were late? Hardly good enough.
its a release, a change of scenery and it clears your mind
Well people who go for a drive for fun don't go any where near Motorways. Personally I go round the country lanes.
Sometimes it's the freedom. Roads aren't always backed up and jammed, and when thier not.it's open road time.
It's boring as hell. It's not interesting at all. But for some people, anything is interesting.
Change of mind set.
Freedom, being able to go shopping and sex in the car
I have to say I wouldn't consider driving to be 'fun'! Too much traffic, to dangerous due to other irresponsible drivers and soooo expensive running a car.

However, I feel very lucky to be a driver because of the independance it gives you. Also prefable to public transport because you get to listen to your own music at whatever volume you want and you don't have to share your jounrey with strangers and weirdos! Plus, it gives you time to yourself in the mornings when you're tired, fed up and don't want to go to work.
freedom, to get away from wherever they are, to look at the scenery. Probably the same reasons people go for walks when its not for exercise, just to get out for a bit
driving is over rated. cycling is better for you.
Can't say I like it, but it's preferable to getting on buses these days!
there is absloutely NO fun driving on the M25

fun about driving? being able to get from A to B without having to rely on public transport
freedom

it's getting bloody expensive though
To see if you can out-run the Cop's
Now that is a Thrill-Kill.
controlling yourself.
wats the difference b/n walking by your self and being pushed by another one on a wheel chair?
With you on this one, how the hell can boy racers find it fun driving up and down the same road for hours on end every night?
I think it is probably a feeling of power, of being in control and of freedom to go where you want. If you look at it rationally the cost and the environmental impact are a high price to pay for those benefits.
The only thing I like about cars is that they get you from a to b in the quickest time possible- provided theere's no traffic. I would never drive for pleasure.
I personally like the freedom of having a car and not relying totally on public transport which isn't exactly reliable! Although I enjoy driving, I don't actually go out in my car just to drive, without a destination - but I might if I had a really fancy car!
Driving Makes Me Feel Free,
I Can Go Where I Like When I Like Don't Have To Rely On Others To Take Me Anywhere,
Which Is What I Have Had To Do For Sometime,
Hope To Get A Car Soon.
living in the country is totally different! driving past beautiful scenery and experiencing an executive car can be very thrilling!
it push your Adrenalin, specially when u drive on d free way
It is freedom and power.
Driving is the most obvious means to achieve these things, if you are sighted.
The partially-sighted or unsighted will achieve the same feelings through different methods.
Some appreciate the Engineering or 'beauty of design' for it's own sake.
They cant figure out that is is much more fun and relaxing to take a walk . I guess they much rather sit in a car and breath in toxic fumes and get pissed off at all the other bad drivers. Me I need to be able to see more than pavement and other cars. Give me animals, bugs, grass, trees and fresh air and I will be happy.Oh yeah and all the endorphins from the exercise too. :P
I did drive, and used to enjoy its freedoms, but really i just hated other road users with such a passion, it became,, usefull for me to stop.

People seem to find driving fast stupid, or somewhere new quite fun.

I admit i do miss, being able to get in the car, and drive to anywhere, and just sit, alone, untroubled.

I belive the pleasure derives from a feeling, of being in control, of your body, and a larger space, than you naturally occupy. I think its like how some people feel about gun ownership.

Honestly, i dont think that maybe 40% of people on the roads should be there, the old/young/stupid, and alot of partially sighted people, who wont admit they have a problem, until that day, driving for me isnt a pleasure..
It's about independance and control.

You don't have to depend on anyone to go where you want. It's a form of escaping.
nothing! since i passed my driving test i always seem to be running errands for people or picking them up and dropping them off, my children also think that walking is a chore now, i wish i had never learnt
Apart from the obvious downsides, there are some great up-sides like independance. Independance to go where you want, transport or collect large items, give people a lift to places - go on holiday in a camper van - etc.

I have put off learning to drive until now when im 37, i wish i had done it before but better late than never. I'm quite green too, but so what ? i could drive a electric car, or do a car share. I think getting you're licence would just give you more choices.
Aye if your feckin English
First of all it is not "freedom" as most think it is.. If it were freedom, there would be no licence involved, insurance, car loans and Pigs chasing you for not wearing YOUR SEATBELT. The sad thing about car ownership is it has almost become a necessity. You want a hot girlfriend? Better have a hot car!

Driving is annoying. Especially once the little bastards are out of school then all the tourists start driving around making U turns in front of you.

Yea driving for fun (burning Iraqi oil) can be good IF you are on COUNTRY ROADS. City roads? Forget it. You will feel like Jason Vhorhees after a day driving around town with all the pricks.!!

Hope this helps!

PS If you qualify for a loan, 75% of the population goes out and buys a car to show off. Meanwhile they're living paycheck to paycheck to pay the thing off.
going to fetch your girlfriend after work
Driving in traffic anywhere is not a pleasurable experience. Come to the American West .There are high quality roads out here that are simplly total joys to drive. The roads go through some of the most empty and most incredible places you will ever see. It is on roads like these that driving becomes a source of extreme pleasure.
