Which bike for commuting?

I need a new bike (bicycle) for my commute to work. Its only a couple of miles, but want something a little better than a cheap mountain bike. Whats the best bike I can get in the UK for no more than about 220 pounds? Its all road, no off road.

Hope the links here work, I'm posting some links to the Evans cycles website, but the brands may be stocked by your local bike shop, so check in with them. For that kind of money, I'd go for something like this

what you'd call a hybrid. Nice upright position so you can see aound you in the traffic, mudguards, to keep you clean on the way into work, strong and light frame, carrier to stuff your gear onto.
Or something like this

This is the pricepoint at which most bike shops kick off. Other options you've got are to find a new or second hand bike on ebay, but unless you can test ride it before buying, not sure how useful this is. If you've a second hand bikeshop near you you should be able to pick up a hybrid, or even an older road bike/touring bike which might suit you. The only thing I'd say about these cheaper bikes is don't expect them to last forever. Reckon on giving it a full service once a year, but after 2/3 years of continuous use you'll probably want to buy a new bike. But these are a great way to start. Good luck!!
A moped.
Usually mail order bikes are cheapest. I've seen some decent bikes between £50-£100 brand new.
I have just completed 1000 commuting miles on a Trek 7100 Hybrid. It's comfy, light and strong enough for the occasional kerb. You might be able to pick one up in a sale for that price.
a foldable bike will be good for you cos you will need to get the bus sometime or in some extreme circustances, you might need to pack it away so just get a foldable on i ride bike basically everywhere and i love it very much it is good stuff like getting high
I would look at hybrids sort of a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike.Make sure its got mudguards, they are ideal for commuting. You should get a decent one for £220
