Yes, you can buy online. I assume you are living in the London area, as they are not valid outside the greater London area. There are travel cards, as well, which are a better option if you are making a lot of journeys in one day.

It's all very well applying for discounted travel cards. In some cities/towns there are 2 or 3 train and bus operators and some of them do NOT accept travel cards offered by the other operators. The operator that runs the bus service I use REFUSES to accept travel cards issued by other companies AND the Council Pensioner Card.
