Claim on insurance after drink driving?

Can someone claim on their comprehensive car insurance, if they crash their car, and is prosecuted for drink driving afterwards?

Answers:
It will depend on the policy and the type of accident. If the drink driver was hit in the rear then it will be the other drivers fault and the insurance company probably won't worry at all as they will get their money back (and the policyholder will get their excess back if they have the correct cover). In this situation it is actually better to go directly throught the third party insurers anyway as they will pay for extras - like an improved courtesey car.

A lot of insurance policies will not exclude drink driving. They have to cover all damage to TP's where the driver is at fault regardless of whether the driver was drunk or on drugs. You will probably find that they also cover own damage on a fully comp policy.

In theory the insurance company can attempt to recoiver the costs from a drink driver. However, this can be a costly process and usually does not recover the full amount (especually when any serious injuries are involved). On that basis they probably won't

One thing for definite though, they will refuse to renew the insurance the following year if a conviction is made and no other reputable insurer will take on a driver with a recent dd conviction.
A BIG NO!
highly unlikely.
Read your insurance agreement very carefully - there should be a section about exclusions, where they won't pay.
I have a feeling that would be an exclusion for them i.e. they probably won't pay out.
Don't Drink and Drive.and I don't think the insurance company wants to talk to you right now.
Your Insurance will pay for any damage you caused to another party, but will not pay for any damage to your own vehicle caused by drunk driving. They will then pursue you for any expenses associated with the claim upon your conviction of drink driving, through the courts if necessary.Don't Doubt It!
Tell your friend (wink, wink) that no, the insurance company will not have to pay. Most insurance companies do not cover you if the damage to the vehicle happened during the commission of a felony and drinking and driving is a felony.
Being a Policeman I take such joy in putting away drink driving muppets and wish they all got prison sentences.

Whoever you know who did it lets hope it ruins their life, they lose their job and so on.
comprehensive car insurance covers and damage to you car other than collision like cracked windshields hiting a deer ect. if ran into something it`s not covered under comprehensive this is covered by your collision insurance
Are you kidding? The cost alone for Driving While Intoxicated $1,000 and 3 Days in jail. Then attorneys High insurance, loss of your job! for the next 7 years having proof of insurance Probation Officers. Court ordered Treatment centers. All of this is a very good reason not to drive a while. But if you have an extra $500. deductible then take your car to the body shop. I just came home Friday night opened adult beverage and I'm not going driving. 48 more in the fridge, Hot tub in the back yard and music I don't go out after the pull cap pops.
NO !!!!
No they cannot claim on their insurance. It will basically state on the insurance document that no claim will be entertained if the driver was under the influence of drink or drugs at the time of the incident.
If your breaking the law, don't expect an insurance check.
Do you have a clue as to what comp coverage IS or are you still drunk?
I very much doubt it..
Why not , our DRINK DRIVERS do it all the time .
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm did he mean "DRUNK"driver?
Ive just checked my insurance details, and it doesnt say anything about a felony..
quote
"6. Limitations as to use:
use for social pleasure purposes and travel between home and permanent place of work
The policy does not cover:
use for hiring, comeercial travelling or use for any purpose in connection with the motor trade
Use for racing, pace-making, competitions, rallies, track days, trials or speed tests either on road or track."

so.who knows..
I doubt it since driving while drunk is illegal. If there's a way of them getting out of paying out on a claim they will take it. There's no harm in asking them though, you never know.

When I read this question I though that there would be a lot of self rightous answers. I wasn't disappointed : )
Nope! When you drive with more than the legal limit in your system, your insurance cover is void. Especially as to your comprehensive cover! An injured innocent third party may prevail against the insurance company for liability claims agains the drunken driver but the insurance company will be going after them for compensation for the claim.
anyone who has a drink and then drives, and gets stoped, should be taken off the road for good,
If you crash your car, that's collision, not comprehensive. Yes, it's covered, unless the policy has an exclusion stating that losses will not be covered if you're under the influence. And then after they find out about the drunk driving you will lose your insurance. Are you drunk right now? That question could use some spell/grammar check.
Very doubtful they will pay out, they have the perfect excuse not to pay out.
