Where do all the shoes at the side of motorways come from?

Sorry if this answer is too conventional compared to the fairies and fungi of other answers, but I speak from experience.
When I was at school (many years ago) I travelled there and back by bus. On the way there, it wasn't a very interesting journey.
On the way home it was much livelier.
In warm weather (it does happen occasionally in Northern Ireland) we would open the windows and/or roof vents to cool down the interior of the bus.
Sometimes, if someone was being picked-on on the bus, their shoes would be removed (maybe from their feet, maybe their trainers from their kit bag). If there was an open window, one shoe might make an escape. If the second shoe also escaped, because the bus was travelling, there could be half a mile or so between the shoes.
I suspect that most cases of shoes at the side of the road are due to similar things occurring on school buses, sport-team buses, etc.
It will happen more in warm weather, because if its cold not many will go to the trouble of opening a window just to throw a shoe out, but if the window's already open.
Late at night, the Shoe Fairy puts them there. She's a relative of the missing Sock Fairy!!

Aside from that, I honestly cant think how they get there, toys and hubcaps I can undestand, but shoes, surely you need them.

Bloody good question! My wife and I have noticed this Fortean phenomenon, and always point and smirk and go "Ooo - shoe." When we see one, but can't come up with a viable scenario for how a grown adult comes to be parted with ONE shoe - it's always one, isn't it. Never two.

The shoes are actually a very localised form of fungus that grows only near motorways.
It thrives due to the fumes from the exhausts and the particular nutrients from the particular grade of road tar they use for motorways.
However, it is highly toxic and inedible to humans.
It is believed that the fungus appears to be shaped like a shoe in order to attract tramps, which are it's main source of food.
I have a feeling that they are shoes belonging to accident victims who have been taken to hospital. In that kind of emergency, nobody really bothers about their shoes. Would you?
