Does using the air conditioning in a car use more petrol?

Answers:
Yes.
However, at highway speeds your AC may use less fuel than having your windows open. Due to wind resistance.

Yours: Grumpy
Yes. It makes the engine work a little harder with the increased load of the AC compressor, so a little more petrol is required.
Yes. it sure does
yes..in short the compressor places more demand on the engine.
Yes by far.
yep, swallows it like a python swallows people
Yes!
No. If you leave the AC off and open the windows, the engine will have to work harder to overcome the increased drag.
yes
Yes but only a fraction more per mile. Bit like using the radio or wipers. All uses energy.
to a degree

up to 55mph it is more economical to open your windows as running the a/c at low engine speed put extra stress and demand resulitng in increased fuel consumption.Above 55 its better to run the A.c to to the extra drag caused by open windows

this answer is based on a experiment caried out on discovery channel on a programme called mythbusters
Don't ask gerald s anything else !
You should watch Myth busters. Anyways the answer is yes, but if it is either use AC or role down the windows then it uses less gas to role down the windows when going below 50 but above 50 the wind resistance is greater thus it is more cost effective to role up the windows and put on the AC. At least that was their findings.
For what it's worth.Mythbusters on TV did a test on this. Their vehicle used more gas with the windows down than it did with them up and the AC on.The drag from the open windows consumed more gas than the AC running.
yes and the last quarter tank gets gulped down rather
Yes
yes, ofcourse
yes it does but u be cool
I was gonna say the same as ncc170199.
Yes. It requires more power so more energy is required from the petrol so more has to be burnt. However, having the windows open also increases the fuel consumption as it increases drag, but by not as much.
The answer to your question is MAYBE. The AC unit will increase your fuel usage by around 3-5% if you are on full cooling, but having your windows down instead increases drag. The average "family car" with the windows down will use around 2-3% more fuel up to 50mph, and coniderably more (around 6-7%) above that speed. Your air con unit will top out at using around 5% more fuel. This means that up to 50mph you can keep your windows down, but above 50mph is it actually more fuel efficient to run your air con. Obviously just using your cold air blower will have little or no effect on your economy.
yes ofcourse.. the ac compressor puts load on the engine and it consumes more petrol. however, the cars of higher capacity engines dosent make much diffrence or rather no diffrence coz there engines r of such a high capacity that load of a compressor makes no diffrence 2 them.
I have an Ford Mondao and the air conditioning runs off of the battery
grumpy is correct,, your open windows will use more fuel than an ac system,,
yes it does on my oldmans passat it looses 25 miles per tank full
yes and no. your ac is powered by your alternator/battery now if you have a low battery it will effect your radiator. causing you to over heat. if your car is in good working order you will not "burn Gas" now there is a chain of events that can put wear and tear on your auto that will cause you to use more gas due to your driving conditions. and your cars current state as long as you keep up with your cars maintenance you will be fine remember your AIR Filter it helps so much to keep it clean and also I would recommend that You put in a bottle of stp fuel cleaner the 98 cent red bottle every 3rd tank of gas. If you want better gas mileage you have to look at the way you drive and the car you drive. Peace to ya.
<55mph - Windows down

>55mph - A/C on

That is the best formula for getting better gas mileage in your car.
Unfortunately it does, generally speaking, air-con uses about 10% more fuel
no it does not. in fact, riding with the window open uses more gas, and with the window up and air conditioner on, it happens to use less gas, but the difference between the two is very minute, so there is no real worry. Watch Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel, as they just did a show about it recently.
yes the air con is belt driven by engine. the engine will rev littel higher to power the motor therefore it will use more petrol
Definately! My tip is when u get steamy windows, usually when it rains, stick the air con on cool full blast in short bursts, keep repeating every so often. No steamy windows and less petrol used. Also air con seems to use more fuel if you had a diesel car, I found!
