Why dont people in cars say thanks any more [ie by hand ]?

when i pulled in to let cars past only one in 15 said thanks

Answers:
I say thanks all the time to by either putting my hand up(takes 2 seconds to do) or if it's a car behind me I Dink my hazzard lights! I do agree that people these days are just too rude or in too much of a hurry to get some where to do this simple gesture!

my favourite way of responding to this now(loads of open car windows in the summer) is to shout very, very loudly " Yeah and Thanks to you too" works a treat, get's out some of my vengance for them being so rude, and sometimes you can see them squirming in the seat of the car after they realise they have been rude!!
because they couldn't hear you or they're too tired to say it.
People are getting more rude by the second. I wonder the same thing sometimes.
i say thanks all the time. i think it is rude not to.
Around here, 3/4 of them wave. Have you tried smiling?

I always do. I think that showing courtesy to others will come back to you.
because people drive like idiots. Marshal law should be permitted on the freeway. I'd know I'd be taking a few people down. Stupid freaking monsters.. GRRRAAHHH! people really PISS ME OFF.

This is what happens when you drive for a living.
oh, they tell you how much they like you. they raise one finger to say you are # 1
I still do all the time, and I'm one of those suckers that'll let 10 people go ahead of me when they need to get out of a parking lot.
So sad. It seems manners are a thing of the past.
Because people suck.

I've been driving over 30 years.

I'm courteous to all. but I've come to expect to NOT to count on the same from others.

Often I've LET someone in. on purpose. and with much difficulty. and later. due to construction. that same person. has BEEPED to warn me not to try it.

Try not to COUNT on humanity. and you'll not be disappointed.
Yep, horrid init?
The age of being Polite is well dead/dying!
They're V rude.
May all their collective Bits turn Square & fester at the edges, for being so mean-spirited.
Well it can come off as an obsecene gesture if you dont watch yourself. I guess If it was more personal where you acknowledged each other it would happen more. I always wave. Ont he CB radio you get it alot more. But waves and honks can come off as rude and start road rage.
u can tell by the responses to this post who lives in metro areas. lol. try saying thank you by a hand gesture in downtown chicago and you're likely to piss off some kind of gang member.. although I think it's appropriate unless the other person is an asshole, and then u flip 'em the bird
Cause drivers in general are all ignorant F*%ks!! I always say thanks an by both waving and putting Hazard lights on. And I always let people out. No one ever lets people out these days!! and everyone always wants to overtake - even though your doing the limit (or slightly more) and then they get stopped at lights or something anyway!

Good question

Because people keep getting ruder!
We flash our hazard lights
Hello - I just did this morning - Waved to let the person behind me know I appreciate them letting me in.

Just basics.

Have a great day! :)
I can't answer for the rest of the drivers out there.. but I do.. and yes, I have noticed people don't anymore.. probably because they don't care.
I would agree, it is frustrating. I will try and let people get on the interstate, I will move over and they will even look at me like I am crazy for doing so. People these days can be so concerned about what is good for them that they don't recognize the needs of others and the kindness of others.
It really depends where you live.I live in New York City and more often than not people will say thanks.
It's a sign of the times. People are so aggresive on the road and seem to think that giving way is weakness. I'm amazed at the number of drivers about to leave a roundabout who don't bother to signal, even though they can see a queue of vehicles waiting to emerge. I always try to drive and park as courteously as possible. A least I am doing my best to ensure that other drivers don't consider me to be a road hog.
People think they have the God given right to be let out etc. Lets all try and make a difference by thanking people even if we had the right of way.
I'm studying for my theory test and apparently you aren't allowed to! I was amazed because I thought you would have to, but apparently it'll confuse other drivers and take your attention away from the road. Shocking isn't it!
coz weve learnt that switching the hazards on and off briefly implies the same gesture
i think its because most people are so wrapped up in there own self importance and believe no matter what they believe they have a divine right to cut you up because they drive flashier cars than you
