The Milan-Varese-Como motorway - 85km (53mi) - is generally regarded as the world's first toll motorway. It opened to traffic on 21 Sept 1924, and is now part of the Autostrade SpA network of 3400km (2100mi) of tollway. America's first major toll motorway was the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the Erwin to Carlisle segment of 257km (160mi) which opened 16 years later Oct 1, 1940.
